“Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.” -1 Corinthians 6.18
“For all that is in the world- the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions-is not from the Father but is from the world.” -1 John 2.16
One issue of the Christian life that I am particularly concerned with is the problem of sexual immorality and lust in the lives of men (though I in no way mean to exclude women’s struggles here, only to say that I have no barometer for understanding their difficulties in the same way as I do men’s). This is a problem that I have had to deal with in my own life, as I mentioned in my testimony, and is one which I think we as men spend not nearly enough time discussing. That is a problem because I do not believe that there is any more detrimental activity affecting as many American men (and their families) than that of sexual immorality, especially in the areas of pornography and extramarital affairs. As such there is a responsibility for us as Christians to get it out in the open and work together with each other and the Spirit to edify ourselves and rise above these sins.
One resource which I would want to point you guys to at this time is a group entitled XXXChurch (or sometimes X3Church). They are a web-based community who are dedicated to helping those struggling with pornography, both consumers and producers, in order that they may break the addiction and be able to more fully glorify God with their lifestyles. This movement has grown so large over the past years that they are actually in the stages of planting a church on the Strip in Las Vegas. If you are interested in what they have to say, how they are trying to help, and if you need their services, you can find them online at xxxchurch.com.
If you visit this site you may notice an advertisement for a product called X3Watch. This is a downloadable accountability software which allows you and a partner to set up a system where the software monitors your internet activity and reports any objectionable site visits (i.e. porn) to your friend by email so that they can keep up with you and hold you accountable for what you are viewing online. I would highly recommend this if you are having trouble with the temptations on your computer screen, and would go so far as to offer to partner up with anybody who wants this accountability over their clicking around. If you do, feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and we can talk.
Two other resources I’ll recommend are the books Porn Nation* by Michael Leahy and Every Man’s Battle by Steve Arterburn and Fred Stoeker. Both of these books offer you an objective look at the effects of sexual immorality and discuss why it such an important issue to deal with both from a Christian and a practical point of view.
This is a serious issue and is one which we as guys need to be man enough to ask God’s help in dealing with. If you are struggling with this right now please don’t be afraid to seek God for forgiveness and strength and seek other men for accountability and direction towards getting help. It won’t be easy, but it will certainly be worth it.
